“Just relax.”
“Just breathe.”
“You’re strong enough to get through this.”
For a long time, those were the only tools I had.
And when they stopped working, I thought I was broken.
What I didn’t understand then—but do now—is that when your nervous system is dysregulated, telling yourself to calm down often does the opposite. It doesn’t soothe the system. It asks it to push through.
The Nervous System Doesn’t Respond to Commands
When the nervous system is overwhelmed, the brain shifts into survival mode. This is not a mindset issue. It is a physiological response.
In this state:
- The body is scanning for threat
- Sensation feels intensified or shut down
- Logic and reassurance don’t land
- The system prioritizes endurance over feeling
So when you tell yourself to “just breathe” or “push through,” the nervous system hears one thing: keep going. That creates bypassing, not regulation.
You can’t fix what you don’t feel.
And you can’t feel safely when the nervous system doesn’t feel safe.
Why Breathwork and Meditation Sometimes Stop Working
Here’s where things get misunderstood.
Breathwork, meditation, and somatic awareness are incredibly powerful. I believe in them deeply. But they work best when the nervous system already has some capacity for regulation.
When these tools are used on a system that is deeply dysregulated, they can:
- Increase frustration
- Create shame (“Why isn’t this helping?”)
- Reinforce the belief that something is wrong with you
The truth is simpler and kinder:
Your nervous system may need more support first.
Regulation Comes Before Maintenance
Some people discover nervous system tools early in life. Their systems are still flexible. Breathwork and mindfulness alone may be enough to regulate and maintain balance.
Others don’t discover support until much later—after years of stress, grief, trauma, caregiving, or survival. Their systems have learned to brace, endure, and bypass sensation.
Those nervous systems often need:
- External regulation
- Sensory-based support
- Frequency, vibration, or light
- Safety without effort
This doesn’t mean one path is better than another. It means different nervous systems need different doorways.
The Power of Somatic Support and Nervous System Therapies
When regulation comes through the body—rather than through effort—the system can finally soften. This is where deeper healing begins.
Vibroacoustic sound, frequency-based therapies, and nervous system support help the body feel safety first. Once that foundation is there, breathwork, meditation, and mind-body practices become incredibly effective as maintenance.
It’s not either/or.
It’s both/and.
Healing Is Not Competitive—It’s Collective
One of the biggest myths in healing spaces is that there isn’t enough room. Enough clients. Enough suffering. Enough need.
That simply isn’t true.
There are plenty of people who need support.
And plenty of people who are ready and willing to help.
When we understand how all approaches are connected—mind, body, breath, nervous system—we stop competing and start collaborating. That’s how we serve the collective.
Healing isn’t about proving strength.
It’s about allowing support.
